Give Jack Frost a warm welcome when he comes to visit Raleigh this winter. Here are four popular winter hairstyles that we love!
The Shag
This heavily layered look from the 70s is back with a vengeance, stealing hearts and popping eyeballs from Hollywood to Paris runways. This hairstyle offers movement by the face, and short layers let your hair embrace the volume you’ve always wanted! A shag is a style often worn with a bit of that lived-in tousle, making it a super easy and low-maintenance look. The shag can be done many different ways, so make sure to bring some photos to your stylist and have a good idea of how much length you want left, how short of layers you want, and whether you’re looking for bangs or shorter face framing.
The Mullet
Ride onto Santa’s Nice List with a modern interpretation of the 80s mullet. This hairstyle can suit any gender and facial type, and might just be that “X” factor you’ve been searching for! The mullet incorporates short layers as well, but keeps most of the length in the back. This style is a great choice for those more keen on a wash-and-go style, as the cut enhances natural hair texture, and can even stun with some texture spray on straight hair. As with the shag, a mullet can take a variety of forms, so be sure to consult with your stylist thoroughly about the overall look you’re hoping to achieve.
Wolf Cut
One of the summer’s hottest trends seems to be sneaking its way into the cooler months. The Wolf Cut, which is effectively a combination of the shag and mullet, focuses on front volume and lots of choppy layers. Think primarily of a shag, tweaked to have shorter lengths in the front (mullet inspiration), with layers that may be a bit shorter and/or more disconnected from each other and the length of the hair. Obviously you *could* go follow one of the many cringy tik tok tutorials, but you’ll likely still end up in your stylist’s chair! Let your stylist cover the technical nature of the cut, and you’ll be set for easy styling and a low-maintenance cutting schedule.
The Rachel
Let’s be honest, the obsession with Friends never stopped! In keeping with the “lots of layers” theme, we’re seeing a comeback of distinct face-framing that starts higher up by the face and goes deeper into the hair. Face-framing that starts at the right spot can be used to highlight certain features of the face, by drawing the eye to that area. A full face-frame is a great option for those looking for lots of layers and movement, but who might not be ready to lose too much length. This kind of layering does require styling, so this choice is for those who are willing to spend a little more time on their hair. Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist for a quick tutorial!
Though color might not be the headliner this winter, adding in a few well-placed highlights and/or a money piece can amp up these looks even more!
