Many hairstylists can attest that many a girl with curly hair has sat down and lamented that no one can cut their hair correctly. While a well-executed cut is a must, what many are missing is a proper washing and styling routine. Luckily, the curl experts are here with some tips!

Start with Shampoo and Conditioner for Curly Hair

Curly hair is a naturally drier hair texture, and therefore needs moisture! Shampoo and conditioners made for curly hair are formulated to be extra hydrating, and work to cut down frizz on fine hair and coarse hair textures. Kérastase offers two lines for curly-haired heads. Curl Manifesto’s weightless formula is a great option for fine hair and uses manuka honey to provide 63% more hydration, ceramides to give it 87% more strength, and glycerine for more defined curls AND enhance shine. The Discipline Oléo-Relax line targets unruly, coarse hair, improving smoothness, taming unwanted volume, moisturizing the hair, and easing detangling. Oléo-Relax is infused with Shea Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil, Rosa Muscata Fruit Oil, and Inca Peanut Oil to moisturize and seal hair against humidity.

Styling Starts in the Shower

Once you’ve washed your hair, apply conditioner focused on the ends, and use a wide-tooth comb to clear up any tangles. Rinse out the conditioner and while your hair is still sopping wet, apply your styling products in a cocktail. Scrunching the product in while the hair is still wet is the first step to prevent frizz since once hair begins drying, frizz begins to rear its ugly, frizzy head! After the product is applied, use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to squeeze excess moisture from the hair.

Setting Your Style

While your hair is still wet, do any molding or lifting needed. One pro tip is to use curl clips to create lift at the root. Use your fingers to lift the hair and slide a small clip in at the root to position it for volume as it dries. Curly heads don’t always have the same curl patterns throughout, and some strands may need a little coaxing, so twist them or twist and pin them up for a bit. Leave them in for just about 10-20 minutes to get a little staying power! Some may find extra scrunching does the trick, but keep in mind, the more you touch your hair, the more frizz you create! Using a diffuser attachment on the end of your hairdryer can also help encourage curl and help the hair dry faster–however, make sure your settings are on medium heat and low air flow to avoid disturbing the curl as much as possible.

Stay Glamorous While You Sleep

If you needed an excuse for an indulgent, luxurious silk sheet set, this is it! A silk pillowcase will reduce damage and frizz (the princess vibes are a bonus). Another option for similar results is to sleep with your hair wrapped in a silk scarf (good luck keeping it in place!)

Refresh, and Go!

Second day hair? No problem! Grab a refresher spray like Kérastase Refresh Absolu Redefining and Restyling spray to reinvigorate those natural curls and don’t be afraid to use a curling iron that replicates your natural curl to touch up any stubborn strands!
